Hyderabad, Nov. 5: His teammates might be unable to find novel ways of celebration, but Sachin Tendulkar never falls short of giving them an occasion to do so.
On Thursday, the master blaster added yet another feather to his cap when he went past the 17,000-run mark in one-day internationals. He now has 17,168 runs in 435 matches, ahead of Sanath Jayasuriya’s 13,377 in 441 games (Sri Lanka) and Australia skipper Ricky Ponting’s 12,286 in 329.
Tendulkar, 36, is already the highest run-getter in both one-day and Test cricket.
The capacity crowd at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here gave a standing ovation to Tendulkar, who also completed his 45th one-day hundred on the day.
The moment that the entire nation had been waiting for came off the last ball of the fifth over, when Tendulkar clipped Ben Hilfenhaus towards square-leg for three and in the process surpassed another landmark in his two-decade long cricketing career.
He celebrated by raising his bat heavenwards as he always does since his father’s demise 10 years ago — acknowledging the presence of the Almighty and the spectators who had gathered in big numbers.
Asked to comment on Sachin’s impending landmark, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni had said on the eve of the match, "The burden of expectations are so high that right from the players to the spectators, everyone wants Sachin to score whenever he goes out there to bat.
"I would love to have him score not just the seven runs required to get to the 17,000-run mark but get a big one for us."
