KOLKATA, Nov. 13: Baroda had sealed the fate of their match against Bengal on Day Three itself with a 14-run first innings lead. On the final day, the visitors piled on the agony to secure three points from the drawn Ranji Trophy Super League Group B game at the Eden Gardens here on Friday.
Resuming at 58/1 in their second innings, opener Satyajit Parab’s fluent 154 (20x4, 2x6) backed by Yusuf Pathan’s breezy 63 off just 48 balls and half-centuries from Jacob Martin (52) and wicketkeeper Pinal Shah (unbeaten on 51) led the visitors to finish at 458/8 — tallying 400 runs in 86.2 overs on Friday alone.
Baroda’s aggressive batting on the slow Eden wicket was instrumental in pushing Bengal on the back foot in the post-lunch session. "The wicket was quite easy to bat on. We had planned to play it safe till lunch and then attack. In fact, we had never thought of a declaration especially on this kind of a pitch," Parab said, after registering his 17th first-class century.
Bengal captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla blamed poor batting as the sole reason for the result. "Dada and myself got out at the wrong time. We should have scored much more on such an easy track. There ought to be better application from our batsmen."
Off-the-field issues also dogged the Bengal squad before they leave for Mysore on Saturday to take on Karnataka in their next match. Some senior members of the squad are said to be ‘disgusted’ with the attitude of team manager Russi Jeejeebhoy.
Scores: Baroda 307 & 458/8 in 108.4 overs (Satyajit Parab 154, Yusuf Pathan 63, Jacob Martin 52, Pinal Shah 51 n.o.) drew with Bengal 293
