Navi Mumbai, Nov. 10: Ricky Ponting has compared the series win over India with the World Cup triumph. When a captain does that it shows the kind of keenness with which the team approached the series. Wednesday's game is only of academic interest but Ponting believes a 5-2 score line will make better reading than 4-3. The difference thus far, according to Ponting was Australia's superior bowling skills.
"We want to finish the tour on a positive note. We have played some excellent cricket over the past few weeks and, while the series has been decided, it's certainly not over as far as we're concerned. We will be going full steam," said Ponting.
For a side hit hard by injuries, Australia held up well against a side tough to beat at home. To miss most of the main players and still pocket the series before the final game is a tribute to the Australian system and bench strength.
"I said to the players before this series that I don't care who plays. Even if we have only 11 fit players, we can all contribute in each game and be hard to beat. If you look back at our performances, we've had a few guys who have contributed more than the Indians have and that's been the reason for our success."
India had had a near-invincible record at home. Sri Lanka and England found that out the hard way in the recent past. To Australia's credit, however, they have won the last three ODI series played here.
"We came with nine guys of the team injured and still managed to win. It is a great achievement and everyone in the team played their role to perfection. We are very proud of the work put in by support staff," added Ponting.
The chances were well utilised by the visitors. "Every injury creates an opportunity for another member in the squad and one has to see the positive side of it. When a young guy is exposed to the international level it's a chance to prove his mettle.
"We've had a lot of players who have that experience now. Cameron White, Ben Hilfenhaus and Doug Bollinger will all be better served with this trip," said Ponting.
Ponting's captaincy had come under the scanner after the Ashes loss but he is not perturbed. "As a player and captain I have always given my best and I don't really read too much into others' opinions."
