KOLKATA, Nov. 14: The differences in opinion on ex-coach John Buchanan’s multiple captaincy theory laid the foundation of Kolkata Knight Riders’ forgettable experience in the second edition of the Indian Premier League. To add to that, the soured relationship between the coach and Sourav Ganguly made the situation uncomfortable for the KKR squad in South Africa.
The scenario has now changed. Buchanan is gone, while Ganguly is back at the helm for IPL 2010. Together with the newly appointed coach Dav Whatmore, the KKR captain insisted on a "healthy atmosphere" to keep players fresh ahead of each game.
"There were issues last time around which we shouldn’t talk about at present. However, what’s important is a healthy atmosphere where players have a free mind in this tough and hectic competition," Ganguly said here at the Eden Gardens on Saturday.
"Execution of plans is ultimately what matters. Dav and myself have to work together along with the support staff for all-round success. At the same time, Dav is well aware of conditions in the sub-continent as well as the players’ mindset."
Whatmore is a big hit in the sub-continent especially after his association with the Sri Lankan team during their World Cup triumph back in 1996 and Bangladesh’s qualification to the Super Eight stage two years ago.
"I’m a Sri Lankan," Whatmore quipped, adding, "I’ve had considerably longer stints as coach of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. So, having spent these many years of my life here, I consider myself as someone from the sub-continent."
Keen to avoid talk about his predecessor, Whatmore focussed on the issue of man-management skills that ensured a suitable environment in the dressing room. "The role of a coach is evolving as it undergoes changes in every other group. It’s imperative he knows his boundaries and maintains a good relationship with the captain and players. All things should be done in conjunction with the captain.
"Talking about the KKR squad, it’s certainly not amongst those to finish last. We do have a group of players who are truly excellent," he said.
